From Rough to Refined
The Process
Rough
This collection started, quite literally, in the dirt. Last year, Sarah headed to Montana—one of the few places in the world where sapphires can be mined in the wild. With help from local experts, she sifted through gravel & sorted stones by hand, uncovering a small batch of rough sapphires that stood out instantly.
Cut
Each stone was carefully cleaned, cataloged, and sent to our trusted cutters—experts who coax out the unique beauty within every facet.
Set
We took each sapphire and paired it with a Voyage setting—a Sarah O. signature known for its dreamy shapes, romantic halos, and modern heirloom appeal.
What Makes Montana Sapphires Special?
Montana Sapphires are gemstones sourced from Montana, known for their unique color range, including blues, greens, teals, and yellows. These sapphires are valued for their natural beauty and distinctive colors, as well as their ethical and sustainable mining practices. They are highly durable, with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, making them ideal for long-lasting jewelry.

Our sapphires are sourced from Rock Creek Mine in Phillipsburg, Montana, which is the largest sapphire mine in the world and known for its commitment to sustainability. Sarah recently visited this site, witnessing firsthand how the mine carefully preserves Montana’s natural beauty. After mining, they replace the soil and replant native vegetation, ensuring the land returns to its original state, as pristine as the gems it yields.
